Be a Big Sister
As a Big Sister, I get to spend time with an amazing young woman at a very important time in her life. My Little Sister just turned 11. The challenges she faces as an adolescent girl are probably typical of lots of girls - but she's faced additional struggles as well. I feel so honored when she decides to talk with me about what's going on with her at school or with her friends and family.
My Little Sister and I have so much fun together and I'm always looking forward to seeing her. I have to say, our relationship didn't start off easily - she spent a lot of time testing me to realize my boundaries and learning to trust me. Luckily, I was able to talk to my program specialist at Big Brothers Big Sisters about the different stages in our relationship and some of the issues my Little Sister was dealing with.
Sometimes it's hard to be a Big Sister, mainly because I wish that my Little Sister didn't have so many challenges in her life. But then I realize that because of me, she gets to have time that's just for her. When we hang out, she can have fun and just be a kid. And I feel so lucky that I'm the one who gets to spend time with her. In fact, sometimes I wonder which one of us is enjoying ourselves more!

A True Story
I recently had the chance to speak with the parent of a Little who told me since joining the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Program her daughter's Saturdays have brought on a whole new meaning. The Little had been struggling socially at school and had no interest in trying new things so her mother decided to enroll her in the community program at our organization. Once matched this Little and her Big Sister decided they would make their plans on Saturdays because it was the best day of the week for both of them. Ever since Saturday has become this Little's favorite day of the week. She wakes up Saturday morning with a smile on her face and looks forward to seeing her Big until they meet. Upon returning from their activities she always has an excited story to tell her mother about the activity her and her Big Sister did that day. The Little is also beginning to improve socially and is more willing to try new things than she ever has been before.
